It depends on the color change and the current surface. Going darker to lighter, or over a patched wall, often takes more than two. We quote the coats the job needs rather than the minimum.
Yes. Nail holes, dings, cracks, and failed caulk get addressed during prep. Paint does not hide damaged drywall, it highlights it.
